Effects of microstructure on ultrasonic examination of stainless steel

  • 1. Argonne National Lab., IL (USA)

Description

Ultrasonic inspection of cast stainless steel components or stainless steel welds is difficult and the results hard to interpret. Work is described on the detection of artificial flaws in welded components of stainless steel Type 304 of grain size 15 and 80 μm, with weld material Type 308. The effect of variations of microstructure on velocity of sound, attenuation, and flaw-detection capabilities, for both transverse and longitudinal waves are examined. (UK)
