Refractive index calculation for analysis of aqueous solutions of heavy water

Description
Refractive index measurements are used for analysis of aqueous solutions of D2O, particularly in the intermediate concentration range. The accuracy of titration is around 0.4% of atomic deuterium. Assuming that nsub(HDO)=(nsub(H2O)+nsub(D2O))/2, and that the refractive index of an initial mixture H2O-D2O is, in this case, an additive property of the molecular species, the refractive index n(t) of the ternary mixture (H2O-D2O-HDO) can be expressed by a relation. Using these two equations, it becomes possible to calculate the various types of calibration curves versus n, in the whole range of concentrations. To build these composition - n(t) curves, the only necessary data are the refractive index measurements of pure H2O and D2O and the value of equilibrium constant of the reaction H2O+D2O reversible 2HDO at the proper temperature
Abstract (French)
La refractometrie a ete utilisee comme methode d'etude de solutions aqueuses d'eau lourde, dans le domaine des concentrations intermediaires. La precision est de l'ordre de 0,4% sur le pourcentage atomique en deuterium. Considerant que nsub(HDO)=(nsub(H2O)+nsub(D2O))/2 et que l'indice de refraction d'un melange intitial H2O-D2O est une propriete additive des especes moleculaires presentes, l'indice total n(t) d'un melange ternaire (H2O-D2O-HDO) s'exprime par une relation. Ces deux equations permettent de calculer les differentes courbes d'etalonnage et d'equilibre du systeme, en fonction de n(t) dans tout le domaine de concentration. Il suffit alors, pour etablir ces courbes de composition, de connaitre simplement la constante d'equilibre de la reaction H2O+D2O reversible 2HDO a une temperature donnee et les indices de refraction de H2O et D2O correspondantsAdditional details
