Description
As soon as NATO strokes were stopped over, we've done dosimetric control of almost all crushed and partially damaged NATO aircrafts (F-117A, F-16C), missiles (AGM-130, 88HARM, 154), guided bombs (GBU-15, 27, 29), cruise missiles (Tomahawk) and unmanned aerial vehicles (CL-289 and HUNTER). During back part surface control in the level of engine of unmanned aerial vehicle CL-289, we measured absorbed dose rate 1.5 μGy/h. After removing engine cover (2 mm aluminium thickness wall) and engine, we concluded that compressor on which surface we detected absorbed dose rate of almost around 2 μGy/h is a source of ionizing radiation. Compressor is made of magnesium and gamma-spectrometry analysis of its parts showed us that it also contains radioisotopes 232 Th (specific activity 113.6 kBq/kg) and 234Th (specific activity 47.6 kBq/kg), which made them radioactive material. The purpose of previously mentioned radioisotope is to improve mechanical quality of material. It's already known that some aircraft engines (for example 'Wiper') also contain 232Th. (author)
