Vitrification of radioactive wastes in plasma reactor

Description

A possibility of vitrification of simulated and actual liquid radioactive wastes in flow plasma reactor with arc plasmatrones has been demonstrated. It has been shown that reactor may be used as very effective calciner. Most suitable for radioactive waste immobilization are glass materials preparated after additional treatment of melts in flow channel or homogeneizing chamber. The best results of glass melting are achieved by utilization of fritted, compacted or sol-gel batches. The volatilization of cesium do not exceed 4%, for sodium and boron-3%. Leach rate of 137Cs is limited by 10-5-10-6 g·sm-2·day-1
