Description
Full text:In 1867 Mendeleev established the periodic table of elements. Recent discoveries of new elements push further its upper limit. To synthesise a new element a fusion reaction between nuclei is needed. The theoretical description of this process is subtle for reactions between heavy nuclei as the Coulomb repulsion has a tremendous influence on the reaction process and stability of compound nuclei. Moreover producing these elements is a technological challenge. First the experiment done in GANIL(France) to produce the element of charge 114 will be detailed. Then the stochastic model of fusion that permit to guide the experiments will be presented. Copyright (2005) Australian Institute of Physics
