Description

Precise estimation of 14C specific activity (Bq/kg C) in environmental matrices requires accurate data on total Carbon (C) content of the samples being analyzed. IAEA-TECDOC 1616 has given a representative value of 38% (for dry weight) as the total C content in environmental matrices. In this paper we present the details of a new method for the estimation of total C content in environmental matrices. We also demonstrate the necessity of generating site specific database on C content for accurate determination of 14C specific activity for impact assessments. (author)
