Radiation induced conductivity and voltage holding characteristics of insulation gas for the ITER NBI

Description
An irradiation experiment on insulation gas was carried out to evaluate ionization current and voltage holding characteristics with the gamma-rays from Co-60. The gases of air, SF6, C2F6, CO2, and mixture of air and SF6 were investigated using parallel-disk electrodes all the absorbed dose rate of up to 0.45 Gy/s. Ionization current increased linearly with gap length between electrodes, gas pressure, absorbed dose rate, and molecular weight. An experimental formula to estimate ionization current was obtained on the basis of experimental results. Degradation of breakdown voltage with gamma-rays was at most about 10%; however, the degree of the degradation did not depend strongly on absorbed dose rate
