A local method for sampling and regulation of Monte Carlo particles in the TROLL code for radiative transfer equations (RTE)

Description

This report presents the new local method for the sampling and the regulation of Monte Carlo particles and compares it to the baseline method used in the code FCI2 [5]. The body of this document deals with Monte Carlo methods for RTE, focusing on the sampling and the regulation of particles, and details the compared methods. For that, the first section reminds briefly the context of Monte Carlo methods for RTE, the challenges of sampling and regulating particles, and presents the benefits and drawbacks of the baseline method. Then, the second section describes the general algorithm of the local method, as well as its properties and specificities. Finally, the numerical comparison is performed on a test, simple but representative of a physical regime that occurs in Inertial Confinement Fusion experiments: a Marshak radiation wave, for which we compare means and variances of the two methods. An appendix dedicated to unfamiliar reader reminds the definitions and the main results allowing to use Monte Carlo methods in a general context. An application on a transport equation, simplified for educational purposes, is also proposed (see [12] for an exhaustive presentation of the subject). (author)

Abstract (French)

Ce rapport presente la nouvelle methode locale pour l'echantillonnage et la regulation des particules Monte-Carlo et la compare a la methode classique, historiquement utilisee dans le code FCI2 [5]. Le corps de ce document aborde les methodes Monte-Carlo en transfert radiatif en se concentrant sur l'echantillonnage et la regulation des particules, et detaille les methodes comparees. Pour cela, la premiere section rappelle succinctement le contexte des methodes Monte-Carlo en transfert radiatif, les enjeux de l'echantillonnage et de la regulation des particules, et presente les avantages et les inconvenients de la methode classique. Puis, la seconde section se concentre sur l'algorithme general de la methode locale ainsi que ses proprietes et specificites. Enfin, la comparaison numerique est effectuee sur un test, simple mais representatif d'un phenomene mis en jeu lors de la Fusion par Confinement Inertiel: une onde radiative de type Marshak, pour laquelle on compare les esperances et variances des deux methodes. Une annexe rappelle les definitions et principaux resultats permettant d'utiliser les methodes Monte-Carlo dans un contexte general en s'adressant aux lecteurs non familiarises avec ce type de methodes. Une application sur une equation de transport, simplifie par souci pedagogique, est egalement proposee (nous invitons a consulter [12] pour une presentation exhaustive du sujet). (auteur)
