Use of regenerated uranium and plutonium in WWER reactors

  • 2. Federal Agency of Atomic Energy (RU)

Description

Recycling of non-separated U and Pu mixture, produced by treatment of NPP spent fuel of WWER-1000 reactor is considered. Regenerated and purified U-Pu mixture is used for fabrication of fuel assemblies with addition of enriched natural uranium. Calculated content of U and Pu isotopes in 'fresh' and spent U-Pu fuel after the first and the second recycle in WWER-1000 is given. The main advantages of the fuel recycling, such as saving of natural uranium, decreasing of spent fuel amount as compared with open fuel cycle and reducing the risk of plutonium proliferation are discussed.
