Design and safety features of the ALMR (PRISM)
Description
The Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor (ALMR) is an innovative, economically competitive, passively safe, modular and factory-fabric able power plant. It is part of the ALMR Actinide Recycle System being developed in the United States which has the promise to recycle LWR spent fuel. In 1994, the ALMR received a positive Preapplication Safety Evaluation Review from the U.S. NRC. The passive heat removal and reactor shutdown safety features and the simplicity of the design are keys to achieving the license ability and economics necessary to deploy this reactor in the early 21st Century. The design is nearing completion of the Advanced Conceptual Design and will enter the next phase of preliminary detailed design in 1995 if the political process in the U.S. permits. If successful, the ALMR Actinide Recycle System can mitigate the LWR spent fuel disposal and enhance deployment of Advanced Light Water Reactors like the ABWR to supply the power needs of the growth economies, particularly in Pacific Rim, and especially in Korea
