Status of and possible approaches to the standardization of the safety of elements of the nuclear fuel cycle

Description

The paper analyzes trends in assuring the safety of the separate elements of the nuclear fuel cycle. The fuel cycle elements considered are a mining and metallurgical complex, an enrichment plant, a nuclear fuel manufacturer, a spent nuclear fuel transportation complex, nuclear power plants, a radiochemical plant, and a radioactive waste storage site. Each element is assessed according to the potential hazard posed to the public and the environment, the degree of stress in the parameters of the technological processes, and past accidents. The analysis shows that document standardization must be developed as quickly as possible. A standardization system is proposed in the paper. 7 refs., 1 tab
