Characterisation of a well-type NaI(Tl) detector and validation of a Monte Carlo model

Description

A well-type NaI(Tl) scintillation detector is a popular radiation counter that provides high detection efficiency for γ-emitting radionuclides providing close to 4π geometry. In this study a well type NaI(Tl) detector was characterised and a Monte Carlo (MC) model was validated experimentally, to provide a tool for primary standardization of radionuclides by 4πγ counting [1]. Ultimately, this detector will form part of a 4πβ(Plastic Scintillator)-4πγ counting system that is currently being developed as a primary standardization instrument for radionuclide metrology.
