Problems in classifying cool degenerate stars
Description
It is shown from model atmosphere calculations that cool, hydrogen-rich degenerate stars may readily be confused spectroscopically with subdwarfs. Many faint, cool, high-proper-motion stars currently classified as subdwarfs may thus turn out to be cool degenerates. Empirical studies of white-dwarf cooling times which do not take this into account may be in serious error
