Photocatalytic oxidation of Methyl-p- tolyl sulfide by O2 over titanium dioxide
Description
The oxidation of Methyl-p- tolyl sulfide in liquid phase by O2 over UV-illuminated TiO2 at room temperature has been studied. From the effects of the mass of the catalyst, solvent and the flow rate of oxygen, it is concluded that the reaction is photo catalytic. The products obtained are the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone, with selectivity at sulfur atom. The oxidation products have been postulated to proceed through an intermediate which could be a super sulfoxide and which react with a second molecule of sulfide or by rearrangement. A reaction mechanism is proposed. (author)
