Experimental investigation of the mechanical state of torsatron type magnetic system models

Description

Set-up of the experiments on studying the ''force-free'' coils deformation peculiarities may be related to investigations of the stability of coils free of supports limiting turn displacement in the direction, being of interest to us. Two small-scale ''force-free'' models were made for the aim of these experiments in view. Both these models consists of equally inclined screw coil, averaged slope of which falls in the range of 40-45 deg, and compensating poloidal turn. Test of the first model with a three-turn ''force-free'' equally inclined coil have displayed, that multi-turn configuration is unstable to translations along a toroidal surface. Tests of both models confirmed that at definite geometric relations and values of field stresses caused by forces of ''force free'' coil transverse compression may be rather large. Tests of the second model, which enables to achive the induction of 6 T, confirmed reliability of calculation results and limiting role of stresses of transverse compression
