Spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. Pt. 2
Description
Radioactive substances have been produced and used for different purposes since the turn of the century. The discovery of the possibility to produce energy through nuclear fission and the upon this based development of nuclear power have considerably increased the extent of this trade. The nuclear power gives as by-products large quantities of radioactive matter, which mainly must be classified and treated as waste. The industrial work, which is needed to support the nuclear power with fuel and to process and take care of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste, is called the cycle of operation of the nuclear fuel or the fuel cycle. The following parts contain a summarizing description of the nuclear power plants, which are beeing built in Sweden, and their fuel cycles. In connection with this an account for types and quantities of waste in different stages of the fuel cycle is given. (M.S.)
