Beam coherent instability in the IHEP accelerator

Description
The results of experimental investigation of coherent instability of vertical and radial betatron oscillations are reported. It is shown that the instability is due to the interaction of the beam with the walls of the vacuum chamber. Positive ions formed during ionization of residual gas by the beam produce a small stabilizing effect. Experimental data and calculations are in agreement within about 30%
