Detection of liver tumors with I131 Rose Bengal

Description

It is possible to visualize tumors of the liver utilizing isotope scanning techniques. I131-labelled Rose Bengal administered intravenously localizes quite specifically in functional liver tissue. Space-occupying lesions in the liver do not concentrate this dye and they therefore appear in the scans as areas of decreased radioactivity. Utilizing high contrast photoscanning techniques and focusing collimators we have been able to make a correct diagnosis in 90% of the cases studied. Tumors 2 cm. in diameter or larger anywhere in the liver are readily visualized. (author)

Abstract (French)

Il est possible de localiser les tumeurs du foie en utilisant les techniques d'exploration par les isotopes. Le Rose Bengale marque a l'iode131 et injecte par voie intraveineuse se fixe tres specifiquement dans les tissus hepatiques fonctionnels. Les lesions ayant une certaine surface ne fixent pas ce colorant dans les memes proportions et par consequent apparaissent a l'examen oomme des zones de radioactivite moins forte. A l'aide de techniques de photo-exploration a fort contraste et de collimateurs a focalisation, les auteurs ont pu etablir un diagnostic correct dans 90 pour cent des cas etudies. Il est facile de faire apparaitre des tumeurs de 2 cm ou plus de diametre, situees dans n'importe quelle region du foie. (author)

Abstract (Spanish)

Es posible localizar los tumores del higado utilizando tecnicas de exploracion mediante isotopos. El Rosa Bengala marcado con I131 y administrado por via intra-venosa se concentra selectivamente en los tejidos funcionales del higado. Las lesiones hepaticas de cierta extension fijan ese colorante de manera especifica, por lo que aparecen en las exploraciones como zonas de menor radiactividad. Empleando tecnicas de fotoexploracion de elevado contraste y colimadores de enfoque, los autores han podido establecer diagnoesticos correctos en el 90 por ciento de los casos estudiados. Los tumores de 2 o mas centimetres de diametro situados en cualquier parte del higado pueden localizarse facilmente mediante este procedimiento. (author)

Opukholi pecheni mozhno nablyudat', pribegaya k metodam issledovaniya s pomoshch'yu izotopov. Pri vnutrivennom vvedenii mechennyj I131 krasitel' sosredotochivaets ya spetsificheski m obrazom v funktsional'noj tkani pecheni. Porazhennye zhe chasti pecheni ego ne zaderzhivayut, a poehtomu oni poyavlyayutsya na ehkrane kak mesta s ponizhennoj radioaktivnost'yu. Primenyaya vysokokontrastny e fotomaterialy i fokusiruyushchi e kollimatory, nam udalos' postavit' pravil'nyj diagnoz v 90% izuchaemykh sluchayakh. Nalichie v lyuboj chasti pecheni opukholej diametrom v 2 sm ili bol'she bystro ustanavlivaetsya. (author)
