Creators
- 1. UKAEA Windscale Nuclear Power Development Labs.

Description
The experimental programme carried out on the Windscale Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor is reviewed. Topics covered include the development of an economic fuel pin to withstand 18 GWD/t burn-up, the work on graphite inhibition and carbon deposition that will enable a suitable choice of coolant composition to be made, and the demonstration of the high reliability of the design by achieving a 70% overall load factor since start up. In addition the experience gained over a wide range of engineering and technical features in the AGR is reviewed and the lessons learned are indicated. (author)
