A review of current applications of computed tomography in radiotherapy with particular reference to plesiotherapy techniques

The role of computerized tomography (CT) in external beam radiotherapy regarding the diagnostic aspects of therapy planning and the therapy aspects including making accurate dosimetry calculations is briefly described. The application of CT in planning plesiotherapy (interstitial and intracavitary techniques) is discussed in greater detail. This includes using CT for obtaining accurate three-dimensional anatomical information regarding tumour volume and surrounding structures and for localizing the geometry of sources after implantation for dose distribution calculations in multiple planes.
