A semi-analytical technique for the design of rolled joints
Creators

Description
The present paper describes a procedure for preliminary design of rolled joints which was used as an aid to experimental work for the development of a wide range of rolled joints, including extra-large size and thin-sleeve joints, for R-5 reactor. First part of the paper presents a semi-empirical procedure, based on an analysis of reported data, for designing the joint geometry. The second part outlines an elasto-plastic analysis, based on hydraulic expansion assumption, modified by introduction of empirical parameters, for estimating the residual contact pressure as a function of degree of expansion of a rolled joint. Comparisons with experimental results have been made. (orig.)
