Multi-annual programing of energy, the place of nuclear energy in tomorrow's France

Description

The energy is a very sensitive sector because it has direct, financial, climatic and geopolitical impacts on the activity and development of a nation, enterprises and households. 75% of the energy consumed in France stem from fossil energies (coal, oil and natural gas) and represent a very large part of its greenhouse gas emissions. Electricity is expected to grow steadily because of a massive use in transport and heating. The French government has announced a bigger support for the development of renewable energies up to 8 billions euros over 10 years and has reaffirmed that nuclear power has an important role to play in the energy mix as it is carbon-free, reliable and low cost. In order to make room to renewable energies, the share of nuclear power will decrease down to 50 % by 2035. This limit has been postponed as it was set to 2025 by the previous government. This energy policy will imply the closure of 14 reactors over a 15 year period. (A.C.)
