The dynamics of physisorbed layers studied by neutron scattering

Description

We discuss the neutron scattering technique applied to the study of adsorbed thin films. Despite the fact that neutrons are scattered very weakly by surfaces, recent studies have shown that both structural and dynamical information can be obtained even for submonolayer coverages. Results will be shown for films of Ar, D2, H2, and O2 adsorbed on (001) surfaces of graphite and for H2 molecules adsorbed on activated alumina. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Wir diskutieren die Anwendung der Neutronenstreuungs-Technik auf die Untersuchung von adsorbierten duennen Filmen. Obwohl Neutronen an Oberflaechen nur sehr schwach gestreut werden, haben neuere Untersuchungen gezeigt, dass selbst fuer Submonoschicht-Bedeckungen sowohl strukturelle als auch dynamische Information erhalten werden kann. Es werden Ergebnisse fuer auf (001)-Oberflaechen von Graphit adsorbierte Filme von Ar, D2, H2, und O2 sowie auf aktiviertem Aluminium adsorbierte H2-Molekuele gezeigt. (orig.)
