Description

Inflationary universe models and the cosmic string theory provide two distinct ways to explain the origin of inhomogeneities in the universe on large scales. I shall summarize and compare the two mechanisms for the origin of galaxies and clusters of galaxies, and mention some recent results on galaxy formation with hot dark matter and cosmic strings.
