Medicine also needs nuclear technology
Creators
Description
Computerized axial tomography with X-rays (CT), magnetic fields (MRI) or radioisotopes has revolutionized medical diagnostics during the last two decades. This paper illustrates the principles of CT, positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission tomography (SPECT) in a popular way. It reviews also the use and production of radionuclides. A decreasing trend has been observed in the population dose of nuclear medicine, but the population dose of CT-examinations is still increasing in spite of the competition between CT- and MRI-techniques.
