Increasing the yield of metastable argon effusing from a Penning discharge by using an external magnetic field

Description

Previously we have used a Penning discharge as a source of metastable argon f or time-of-flight scattering experiments. Currently we report on an increase of the metastable argon yield produced by the addition of a solenoid around the discharge source. This yield has been measured for a range of discharge pressure, voltage and current for magnetic field strengths from 0 to 31 mT. The argon metastable atom intensity observed in the effusive beam increases to a maximum value which is about ten times the zero field case
