Controlled clinical trial in the advanced primary lung cancer

Description
The results of a controlled clinical trial in the treatment of advanced primary lung cancer are presented. There were 39 patients who entered the present study that was conducted at the Thoracic Surgery Departament of the A.C. Camargo Hospital of the Antonio Prudente Foundation of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The patients were divided in two groups 1) - Radiotherapy with Cobalt 60 plus Chemotherapy. 2) - Chemotherapy only. The radiotherapy was provided by the split dose technic (6.000 rads in 3 cycles of 2.000 rads each). The chemotherapy consisted of the following drugs (5 FU, Metil hidrazina, Methotrexate, Actinomycin D, Oncovin, Cytoxan) administered in 16 cycles, aiming the synchronous funtional blockade. There was no statistically significant difference in survival of the two groups, ie, the first with 19,3 weeks and the second group with 14,6 weeks. (Author)
Abstract (Portuguese)
Apresentam-se os resultados de ensaio terapeutico controlado no carcionoma primitivo de pulmao avancado, em que foram incluidos 39 pacientes atendidos no Departamento de Cirurgia Toracica do Hospital A.C. Camargo da Fundacao Antonio Prudente, Sao Paulo, Brasil. Os grupos usados foram: 1) - Telecobaltoterapia + Quimioterapia e 2) - Quimioterapia. A tecnica usada no tratamento pelas irradiacoes foi 'split dose' (6.000 rads, em 3 series de 2.000 rads cada uma). A terapeutica pelas drogas antitumorais constou de 16 series (5 Fluoro-uracil, Metilhidrazina, Metotrexate, Actinomicina D, Vincristina, Ciclofosfamida), visando um bloqueio sucessivo, sincronico e funcional da populacao celular neoplastica (base citodinamica). Nao houve diferencas significativas, do ponto de vista estatistico, na comparacao das sobrevidas dos pacientes submetidos aos tratamentos propostos: TECO + Qt = 19,3 semanas e Qt = 14,6 semanas.
