Gas-flow experiments in the transition region

Description

A special gas-flow facility was designed and constructed for the purpose of accurately measuring UF6 gas flow through a variety of gas-flow restrictions. The facility was used to measure the gas flow through 15 different orifices and 20 short tubes over a nominal pressure range from 0.002 to 100 Torr. The intent of the experiments was to confirm a new theoretical approach to gas flow through short tubes in the transition range between laminar viscous flow and molecular flow. The theoretical approach previously discussed [Santeler, J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A 4, 338, 348 (1986)] (1986) became a part of the basis for several computer programs used for calculating gas flow in vacuum systems. A number of interesting results in turbulent flow were observed during the experiments and are discussed in the paper. The results of the experiments confirmed the proposed model and were used to evaluate specific parameters of the proposed equations
