Polarized 3He beam on the Texas AandM cyclotron

Description
This paper describes the polarized 3He+ source installed and operated on the Texas AandM 224-cm cyclotron during the mid 1970s. Polarization was produced by optical pumping. The source produced about 8μA of 3He+ at 16 keV with an emittance of 10 mmxmrxMeV/sup 1/2/. This beam was guided to the center region of the cyclotron, accelerated without loss of polarization, stripped, and focussed on target (100 nA on a 0.2 cm2 spot at 38 MeV). Beams were developed between 18.4 and 49.0 MeV. Major improvements would be ionizing to 3He++ before acceleration to get higher energies and using a brighter light source (a laser if possible) to get higher polarizations
