Description
The paper presents the strategic energy option for an independent Europe analysing the current situation and the proposed scenarios for the structure of the future industrial power sources. Taking into account the regional requirements for the abatement of carbon dioxide emissions, the advantages and benefits of current and future nuclear power technologies are presented. In conclusion one stresses the reasons why nuclear energy is an essential part of the energy mix. First, it strengthens the security of energy supply. It reduces the reliance on imported fossil fuels and electricity imports. It encourages the sustainable development and by curbing the carbon dioxide emissions, it is combating the global climate change. The key actions to be taken in order to ensure that nuclear energy will continue being part of the European energy mix in the future are steps aiming at increasing public awareness and acceptance, as well as at encouraging investments for the nuclear new build and supporting research and development in new and already existing nuclear technologies
