Nuclear reactor with a temperature made homogeneous by combining coolant flow from different zones

Description

Localised areas at extremely high temperature inside the core of a reactor can raise the temperature of the coolant crossing such a localised area to temperatures substantially higher than that of the mean temperature of the coolant leaving the reactor core. These hot flows, called 'hot streams' may have an adverse effect on the jackets of high pressure chambers, on the cladding of transversal pipes and on heat exchanger coils. The need to allow for the possibility of hot streams is one of the important restrictive factors in the design of reactors. On of the aims of this invention is to build a nuclear reactor that will reduce the presence of hot streams by combining the coolant flows coming from neighbouring fuel areas in a manner resulting in the establishment of a mean coolant temperature

Abstract (French)

Des regions localisees a temperature extremement elevee a l'interieur du coeur d'un reacteur peuvent elever la temperature du refrigerant traversant cette region localisee a des temperatures sensiblement superieures a celle de la temperature moyenne du refrigerant quittant le coeur du reacteur. Ces flux chauds, appeles 'veines chaudes', peuvent avoir un effet defavorable sur les chemisages de chambre de surpression, sur le revetement des canalisations transversales, et sur les serpentins echangeurs de chaleur. La necessite de tenir compte de l'eventualite de veines chaudes est un des facteurs de limitation importants dans la conception des reacteurs. Un des buts de la presente invention est de realiser un reacteur nucleaire qui reduise la presence de veines chaudes en combinant les ecoulements de refrigerant provenant de regions de combustible voisines d'une maniere se traduisant par l'etablissement d'une moyenne de la temperature de refrigerant
