Description
A new version of the algebraic Reynolds stress model (ASM) is formulated, simplified, and employed to simulate strongly swirling flows. This model for axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates accounts for some physical mechanisms relevant to swirl-turbulence interactions that have been ignored in the original ASM derived for Cartesian coordinates. The calculated results of gas tangential and axial velocities based on this model are in good agreement with the measurements. The central toroidal recirculation zone and the combined forced and free vortex motion are well predicted. Comparisons of the predicted mean dynamic properties of strongly swirling flows show the superiority of the present model over the k-ε model and the original ASM. a turbulence model constant β which is introduced in the model formulation and represents the intensity of rotational effect on turbulence, is optimized through successive comparisons with the measured data
