Nuclear energy and its future contribution to the energy supply

The energy policies of the FRG are oriented at energy savings and a progressive substitution of mineral oil and (in the long run) of natural gas by nuclear energy. Besides, solid fossil primary energy carriers are refined with the aid of nuclear energy. In this context, creative forces in science and technology have the task to advance reactor technology, to close the fuel cycle, to construct extensive heat transport and heat distribution networks, to develop techniques for the utilization of nuclear process heat, and, finally, to restructure oil refineries. All these measures and projects deserve priority because they form the foundation for the FRG's guaranteed energy supply on a long-term basis. (orig.)
