Spontaneous symmetry breakdown induced by quantum effects

Description

The stability of the symmetric vacuum of a simple model involving two scalar fields is examined. If quantum corrections to the effective potential are included up to first order in h it is found that under certain conditions the quantum corrections induce an instability in the symmetric vacuum. Possible implications of this result for other models, such as massless electrodynamics, are discussed. (author)
