Mammographic examinations with regard to the clinically occult mastocarcinoma

Description

There are different opinions on the value of mammography for early differential diagnosis of breast cancer. In most cases, it is still the woman herself who detects the cancer. Half these women will survive less than 5 years. Mammography in mass examinations and medical check-ups can detect early changes in the breasts at a stage where there are still no manifest clinical signs. The efficiency of mammography is statistically analyzed under standardized conditions. It is superior to every other diagnostic technique in particular in the detection of occult carcinomas. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Die Auffassungen ueber den differentialdiagnostischen Stellenwert der Mammographie zur Frueherkennung des Mammakarzinoms differieren. In der Mehrzahl der Faelle wird der Brustkrebs auch heute noch von den Frauen selbst erkannt. Die Ueberlebenszeit bei der Haelfte dieser Frauen betraegt weniger als 5 Jahre. Bei Anwendung der Mammographie bei Reihen-oder Vorsorgeuntersuchungen lassen sich Fruehveraenderungen der Brust mit hoher Trefferquote schon in einem Stadium nachweisen, in dem klinisch noch kein manifester Befund zu erheben ist. Unter standardisierten Bedingungen wird die Leistungsfaehigkeit der Mammographie statistisch analysiert. Vor allem zur Aufdeckung okkulter Karzinome erweist sie sich allen anderen diagnostischen Verfahren ueberlegen. (orig.)
