The EFG at cadmium in zirconium
Description
As pointed out in a companion paper the impurity electric field gradient (EFG) in the systems TiCd and HfCd fail to conform to the expectations of either the Universal correlation proposed by Raghavan et al. or to the recent correlation proposed by Ernst et al. specifically intended to include group IVB metals. The determination of the EFG at Cd in Zr metal seems worthwhile, therefore, in order to compare results in structurally and chemically similar hosts. Such a measurement had been attempted with '''In implanted Zr foil using the time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) method on the daughter '''Cd, but no definitive conclusion could be reached. It was indicated however that a fraction of the implanted atoms may have been in a unique site with relatively weak EFG. Recently several attempts were made to diffuse '''In into Zr foils and again, although some evidence of a low quadrupole frequency was present in data, an unambiguous result could not be obtained.
