Process to produce homogenized reactor fuels
Description
The fuels consist of a mixture of PuO2 and UO2. In order to increase the homogeneity of mechanically mixed fuels the pellets are sintered in a hydrogen atmosphere with a sufficiently low oxygen potential. This results in a reduction of Pu+4 to Pu+3. By the reduction process water vapor is obtained increasing the pressure within the PuO2 particles and causing PuO2 to be pressed into the uranium oxide structure. (DG)

Die Brennstoffe bestehen aus einem Gemisch aus PuO2 und UO2. Um die Homogenitaet mechanisch vermischter Brennstoffe zu erhoehen, wird eine Sinterung der Brennstoffpillen in einer Wasserstoffatmosphaere mit hinreichend niedrigem Sauerstoffpotential durchgefuehrt. Hierbei wird Pu+4 zu Pu+3 reduziert. Dieser Reduktionsvorgang ergibt Wasserdampf, der den Druck innerhalb der PuO2-Teilchen steigert und bewirkt, dass PuO2 in das Uranoxidgefuege gepresst wird.
