Imaging of the normal anatomy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)

Description

Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are well established imaging modalities to examine the TMJ. MRI is superior to CT in delineating the morphological architecture of the TMJ, not only in cases of normal anatomy, inflammation or tumors, but also if dysfunction of the TMJ is present. This review article presents anatomy as well as imaging strategies of the TMJ. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Die Computertomographie (CT) und Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) gelten je nach Fragestellung als etablierte Bildgebungstechniken zur Untersuchung des Temporomandibulargelenks. In der Darstellung des morphologischen Feinbaus des Kiefergelenks ist die MRT der CT deutlich ueberlegen und wird deshalb, nicht nur bei Entzuendungen oder Tumoren, sondern auch in der Funktionsdiagnostik, als etabliertes Standarduntersuchungsverfahren eingesetzt. In dieser Uebersichtsarbeit werden sowohl die Anatomie des Temporomandibulargelenks als auch die Untersuchungsstrategien eroertert. (orig.)
