Description
The total energy is approximated in an ionic model. By applying the obtained total energy formula to the YBa2Cu4O8 superconductor, the possible hole distributions are investigated. The results show that the hole is predominantly on the apical oxygen, only about 0.06 holes per CuO2 plane, which is in agreement with photoemission experiments indicating that the hole has oxygen character.
