Evaluation of an IPCC climate report. An analysis of conclusions on the possible regional consequences of climate change
Description
This report contains the results of a study of the reliability of the regional chapters (H9-16) of the contribution of Working Group II to the Fourth Climate Report of the IPCC (the sub report on consequences, adaptation and vulnerability). Moreover an assessment was made of the possible consequences of errors for the conclusions in the high level summaries of that report. The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency did not detect any errors that may undermine the main conclusions of the scientific UN Climate Panel IPCC of 2007 on the possible future consequences of climate change. However, some of the substantiations of the conclusions lack clarity. To prevent lack of clarity and inaccuracies the IPCC needs to invest more in quality checks.

Dit rapport bevat de resultaten van een onderzoek naar de betrouwbaarheid van de regionale hoofdstukken (H9-16) van de bijdrage van Werkgroep II aan het Vierde Klimaatrapportvan het IPCC (het deelrapport over gevolgen, adaptatie en kwetsbaarheid). Ook is beoordeeld welke gevolgen eventuele fouten hebben voor de conclusies in de hoogste samenvattingen van dat rapport. Het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL) heeft geen fouten gevonden die de hoofdconclusies van het wetenschappelijke VN-klimaatpanel IPCC uit 2007 over de mogelijke toekomstige gevolgen van klimaatverandering ondergraven. Wel is de onderbouwing van conclusies in sommige gevallen onvoldoende helder. Om onduidelijkheden en onzorgvuldigheden zo veel mogelijk te voorkomen moet het IPCC meer gaan investeren in de kwaliteitscontrole.Abstract (English)
