Radiation exposure in thyroid for orthopaedic surgeon

Four orthopaedic surgeons wore a film badge in every medical practice during the period from January 1987 through June 1988, with the purpose of measuring exposure doses in the thyroid. Over a period of 18 months, they were considered to have the likelihood of exposure to radiation in 129 operations and 160 examinations. A total of exposure doses ranged from 7.70 to 23.40 mSv, with an average monthly dose of 0.65-1.30 mSv. Monthly and annual exposure doses per person were 1 mSv and 12 mSv, respectively. These doses were within the safety range recommended by ICRP. However, because there is no threshold dose in the stochastic effect of radiation, a substantial means for preventing radiation is required. (N.K.)
