Description
Experimental results and methods of radiation effect measurements in alkali metal halides are reviewed. The types of crystal defects and, first of all, formation of such defects in ionic crystal lattices under irradiation are briefly explained. Recovery of radiation damages and its conditions are discussed in the light of experimental data. Special consideration is given to the release of the energy stored in the solid during irradiation. Possible hazards arising from this for the safe disposal of high-level wastes in salt formations are briefly discussed. (author)
