Evaluation of sedimentation rate at two sampling stations in the Gulf of Finland based on Pb-210, Cs-137 and Pu-239,240 profiles in sediments

  • 1. Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Research and Environmental Surveillance, Helsinki (Finland)

Description

The project was carried out in co-operation with the Finnish Institute of Marine Research, and the samples were mainly taken on board the Institute's research vessel Aranda. In 1995 sediment samples were taken on three cruises of the RV Aranda from 43 sampling stations situated in the Baltic Proper, the Bothnian Sea and the Gulf of Finland. The aim of the study was to determine sedimentation rates in different parts of Baltic Sea, using Pb-210, Cs-137, Pu-238 and Pu-239,240 profiles in sediments, and to consider differences in the results obtained with different methods. The presentation is based on results from two sampling stations - one situated in the eastern part of the open Gulf of Finland, the other in the archipelago zone of the eastern Gulf of Finland
