Electron injector for the accelerator/storage ring complex at the Institute for Nuclear Studies, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences

Description

Several accelerator/storage ring complexes with electron cooling are now under development in the USSR, including the complex at the Institute for Nuclear Studies, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. It is anticipated that these devices will provide qualitatively new research capabilities in nuclear and atomic physics. The system being developed at the Institute for Nuclear Studies is designed to generate heavy ions (through neon, inclusive) with energies up to 200 MeV per nucleon. An isochronous U-240 cyclotron, which is already available, will serve as the injector. Previous calculations have determined the main physical parameters of the electron cooling system. In the present paper we discuss in more detail the requirements imposed on the transverse angular spread of the velocities of the electron beam, and the design of the electron gun is discussed. 15 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs
