Nuclear power without nuclear bombs. Linear accelerator-breeder concept for decoupling the nuclear power economy from nuclear weapons production
Description
The role of nuclear weapon technology in starting today's nuclear power plants is pointed out. There is another technology that can give us nuclear power without proliferation of weapons production: the linear accelerator-breeder (LAB) in which high-energy protons impinge on heavy metal targets to produce many neutrons which are absorbed in natural fertile material to produce fissile fuel for fission power reactors. Waste can also be transmitted in the same way. This is accomplished without the need for enrichment or reprocessing. The advantages of the LAB over LMFBRs are clear. The fuel cycle using the LAB device is described. Reprocessing and enrichment can only increase the supply of fissile fuel up to 30% whereas LAB can burn up practically all the fertile material which is an increase of 14,000%
