Status of LHD and force free helical reactor (FFHR)
Description
The present status of Large Helical Device (LHD) which is now at the 5th year stage of 8 year LHD Project and under construction in NIFS is presented. The research and development program (R and D), the machine design and its construction have been performed successfully according to the established LHD construction schedule. Since there have been obtained great amount of R and D results on both of physics and engineering in the course of the LHD project, a preliminary attempt on helical type fusion reactor design has been started to make clear the engineering issues related to a demo relevant helical reactor. The typical results are summarized which have been obtained so far in the basic works on closed magnetic surface, ignition condition, and spacing for the blanket and shield in a D-T reactor with the lifetime of 30 years and the thermal output of 3GW.
