The influence of radiation defects on optical hardness of LiF

Description

The influence of gamma-radiation induced defects on laser hardness of lithium fluoride crystals used as elements of non-linear optics was investigated. It was shown that with gamma-radiation dose growth the probability of optical breakdown decreases. It was supposed that during intensive laser irradiation of the surface of gamma-irradiated crystal as result of multiphoton absorption weakly bound carriers are excited thus making contribution to the negative change of dielectric permittivity. This phenomenon decreases the nonlinear refraction coefficient and increases the level of optical breakdown. (A.A.D.)
