Calibration of a thermoluminescent dosimetric system for evaluation of dose distribution in blood components

  • 1. CDTN/CNEN-MG, Belo Horizonte, MG (Brazil)

Description

In recent years, the increasing use of ionizing radiation in various sectors aims to improve quality of life and drive technological advances. Industry, for example, uses this radiation in processes such as sterilization of medical products, treatment of chemical materials, irradiation of food and gemstones, and blood components. Validating and supervising these procedures is crucial to ensure desired results, requiring an accurate and safe dosimetric system, aligned with national and international standards in dosimetry. Highlighting the application of irradiation in health, irradiation of blood components is essential before transfusions to prevent the multiplication of T lymphocytes and avoid Transfusion-Associated Graft-Versus-Host Disease (TA-GVHD). The ISO ASTM 51939:2017 standard recommends that all blood and components should receive at least 25 Gy, with no part exceeding 50 Gy or falling below 15 Gy. The Gamma Irradiation Laboratory (LIG) of the Center for the Development of Nuclear Technology (CDTN) complies with these standards through routine dosimetry using radiochromic films. This study focuses on the calibration of thermoluminescent dosimeters (LiF:Mg,Ti) to evaluate the metrological capacity in measuring the irradiation of blood products
