Russian/United States environmental restoration workshop

  • 1. Pacific Northwest Lab., Seattle, WA (United States)

Description

A Russian/United States Environmental Restoration Workshop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), was conducted April 5 through 17, 1993. The focus of the workshop was on characterization and cleanup strategies for radiologically contaminated sites. The primary purpose of the workshop was to (1) provide an overview of the DOE's experience with environmental restoration at specific sites at Hanford; (2) initiate and develop contacts with the Russian institutions; (3) learn about the Russian nuclear waste issues; and (4) establish a model for conducting international exchanges through a team approach. Another objective of the workshop was to increase the Russian participants understanding of U.S. government agencies, e.g., Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Commerce (DOC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Agency for International Development (AID) and their roles in environmental issues. The workshop provided an opportunity for DOE, Hanford contractors, and other Hanford stakeholders to share experiences with scientists and high-level officials from institutions associated with nuclear sites in Russia
