A positron lifetime study of defect recovery in electron irradiated Zircaloy-2 and Zr-2.5 Nb

Description

Positron lifetime measurements as a function of isochronal annealing are reported for electron irradiated Zircaloy-2 (Zy) and Zr-2.5 Nb (ZN). The electron irradiations, 1.3 MeV to a fluence of ≅ 1.4 X 1021/m2, were done at 85 K. As irradiated, the specimens have a long lifetime (τ2 = 215 - 225 ps) typical of a vacancy-trapped state. Annealing to 200 - 230 K reduces τ2, this is associated with Fe-vacancy complexing. Large parameter variations are found at higher temperatures for ZN but much less so for Zy: above 230 K the ZN data reveal a remarkable four-fold increase in trapping rate. Variations in τ2 and trapping rate with specimen temperature indicate trapping in more than one type of defect in spite of consistency with the ''one-trap'' trapping model
